The Kakapa Bay residence consists of several buildings, or hales, inspired by the Big Island’s ranching history. The project’s casual camp-like arrangement, complete with a serene swimming pool, offers common areas for gatherings as well as private areas for solitude. Large openings and lanais capture cooling trade winds, thick stone coral walls minimize heat gain, and intricate wood detailing reveals the hand of the artisan. Each building is intimately scaled, and understated, leaving the focus on the place as a whole.
